I’ve long held the belief that the most important skill in business is the ability to communicate with confidence, clarity and impact. Life is a 24 hour, 365 days a year conversation. When we are not speaking with colleagues or customers, friends or family, we are speaking with strangers. When we have stopped talking to each of those groups the conversation continues, although now it’s with ourselves.

We never seem to stop talking. Even when we are asleep, we just call it dreaming. Given the fact that we are doing it all the time I believe we owe it to ourselves to get really good at it. It’s not so much what we do that influences how successful we become but how we make the people around us feel. The emotional impact we have on others is largely driven by what we say and how we say it.

Many business presentations are tedious and a great number of people dread the idea of going to them and giving them. Every now and then someone comes along who challenges the status quo, shakes things up and gives a brilliant presentation.

If you would like to be one of those presenters rather than a mediocre one, you are only 5 steps away:

Step 1: Leave the laptop alone, sit quietly and imagine

We are creatures of habit. The way most of us set about crafting and delivering presentations is no exception. The first thing most professionals do when they are called on to present is open up their laptop and find a presentation they used in the past they believe can help them again.

Resist the urge! The laptop stifles your creativity. One of the greatest intellectual gifts we have is our imagination. We owe it to our audience to use ours effectively.

Imagine what your life may look and feel like if you were one of your audience members. Imagine it was you sitting there listening to yourself speak and ask yourself what would you want to hear, what you would want to know and what you would want to feel.

Now, reflect on all of the presentations you attended yourself recently and ask yourself which were boring and why. When you have some answers, ask yourself which were different and had an impact on you and why.

If you could do anything you wanted to challenge convention to capture and hold your audience’s undivided interest what would you do?

Step 2: Remember the last presentation you attended as a member of the audience

Perhaps it was a difference in the way you thought about the topic or idea, something you were motivated to do as a result or a shift in the way you felt.

If you can’t remember anything then you can regard the presenter as mediocre. A brilliant presenter will do whatever it takes to ensure you remember them and their message. What do you want your audience to remember?

Step 3: Get ready to be vulnerable

When you look at your audience what is it you see? A room of colleagues, potential clients, accountants, or engineers? As you craft your presentation, spend some time thinking about who these people really are. Some may be someone’s mother or father, brother or sister, and each of them will be someone’s son or daughter.

They each have titles and roles to play just as you do. Resist seeing them simply as professionals and look beyond that. Think about how much you have in common.  Everyone has hopes and aspirations, worries and fears, achievements and failures. So don’t be afraid to drop your guard a little and let them see the real you.

No one really wants to sit and listen to a highly polished and slick presenter; they would much rather to listen to someone they can relate too. Be prepared to be a little vulnerable and let them into your world.

Step 4: Keep it focused and simple

To keep things simple you have to start with focus. Focus on your message. Focus on what you want them to think. Focus on what you want them to feel. Focus on what you want them to do when you’ve finished speaking.

If you have 20 minutes to speak prepare to speak for only 15 minutes, in other words keep it short. Don’t use bullet points and avoid using too many words. Use compelling images instead. Think of your slides as billboards. Avoid jargon and steer clear of complexity in any form.

Step 5: Now practice and then practice some more

I’m amazed how often I meet presenters who blame the poor quality and delivery of their presentation on lack of practice. You can craft the most creative, compelling presentation in the world. If you don’t make the effort to practice the way you then deliver it, you are doing yourself and your audience a disservice.

One of the key distinctions between a mediocre presenter and a brilliant one is that the latter will spend time getting intimate with every part of their presentation. They will know their content inside and out. They will practice the way they say it finding the right tone, pitch, volume and pace. They will practice the way they stand and move when they deliver it. That means how they move their hands, their face and their entire body.

Presenting and speaking in public isn’t a simple task. It requires a high level of awareness, a great deal of effort, focus and creativity to deliver a message with impact. Taking the time to follow and apply these 5 key steps will go a very long way to making the impact that you want and that your audience will remember.

Binge eating disorder looks like…

  • self-control
  • willpower
  • freedom

However, when it sneaks out it transforms itself into restriction and starvation, compulsive eating, and doing shameful, unforgivable things with food.

If you look closely enough, you can recognize it in brittle nails, thinning hair, canceled plans, and frantically raiding the refrigerator or pantry the minute everyone leaves the house. It looks like anorexia on the outside, but food addiction on the inside. It’s major weight swings, food hangovers, purging, and body shame.

Binge eating disorder feels like empty happiness because you’re finally skinny enough to win society’s approval yet it feels like the scariest, oddest, most inhumane thing imaginable. You absolutely hate it, but yet are attached to it more than anything else.

It’s feeling faint from going a day or two without food before you start bingeing again. It’s shame, anxiety, and depression all wrapped up into the prettiest-looking gift under the Christmas tree.

It’s calm and shame at the same time. It’s love and hate at the same time. It lifts you up but quickly drops you. It’s your best friend and your worst enemy.

Binge eating disorder sounds like “I’m too fat. I’m not skinny enough. Why am I not good enough? What do I need to do to make my body look better? I hate my body. I hate myself. No one likes me. I’m disgusting. I’m a pig. Don’t eat that; it’s bad. Now I’ve really blown it. So much for toning up this summer!”

All the while you appear perfectly healthy. It’s your dirty little secret. It’s your double life. It’s always planning the next binge. It’s isolation: leaving social gatherings with friends or family knowing your binge awaits you at home; making another trip to the store or restaurant because you didn’t get enough food the first time. It’s eating a week’s worth of calories in one or two days.

It’s canceling plans you have just so that you can crawl back into your shameful world. It’s the only place you feel comfortable. It’s the world where you have less anxiety and less depression.

It’s that mental tug- that inner voice telling you that you want something. “You need something.” It’s like an insect drawn to a bright light. You learn to disguise it behind the smiles; behind the gaiety; behind the convincing talk that you’re just hungry.

You’re “o.k.”, but how “o.k.” are you when you’re stuffing your mouth as tears stream down your face? How “o.k.” are you when you’re hovered over the toilet crying because you can’t get yourself to throw up? How “o.k.” are you when you’re keeping down fewer than 500 calories a day? When will it be enough?

Recovery from binge eating disorder means learning how to say, “I need help.” It’s learning how to take care of yourself without guilt. It means occasionally confiding in a friend or loved one. It means learning to listen to your body instead of your head when it comes to food choices. It’s meditation to calm anxiety around food. It’s going for walks. It’s putting yourself first. It’s letting go of the desire to lose weight. It’s allowing yourself to eat what you want until you’re satisfied. It’s eating whatever you want, whenever you want- hungry or not. Binge eating disorder is challenging your beliefs about what defines beauty and worthiness. It’s loving your life. It’s loving your body. It’s accepting everything about yourself no matter how negative or imperfect.

Binge eating disorder is just a bad habit. Recovery is the chance to take back all the power you once gave it.

Why I Signed Up To Kite Surf With Some Famous Entrepreneurs

I’m dripping with sweat after underestimating the pleasant walk from Google’s office in Silicon Valley to my next meeting. I’m thinking to myself “Why did I bring this stupid DSLR camera which is making my backpack so heavy?”

Anyway, I arrive at my destination. For the first time on my San Fran trip, I’m actually early for a meeting. Every other meeting I have been late to because Google Maps really does make everything look so close together….lol.

I meet my well-known contact at his office, and by the end of the meeting, I’m in. In what you ask? The club, network, business – whatever you want to call it. I know this because I am asked to go and get kite surfing lessons.

I used to skate half pipes, so I figure that I’ve still got this extreme sports ability in me. It’s not the sport itself that fascinated me; it’s the people that participate in it and the opportunities it presents. All the current people I want to meet all seem to do it (and do it well).

There’s plenty that can go wrong and after saying yes I’ve realised that it’s definitely harder than I thought. So what. Sometimes, we have to take a risk. The best decisions we make are based on a gut feeling, not scientific evidence.

The corporate word has failed to teach me that everything isn’t based on facts. The corporate world has also failed to make me agree that every problem has a solution just like in university.

The four things that held me back and may be holding you back from an amazing opportunity like this are:


1. I was scared of being an elephant bumper

elephant-bumperElephant bumping is where you go out of your way to spend time with people who are very famous when you’re not (at least that’s what it means to me). The inference here is that because you are not on the same level as them, you shouldn’t be spending time with these influential people.

I’ve realised this is wrong and in fact, famous entrepreneurs are just like everyone else. We somehow think that they are superhuman, but they’re not. They eat normal food, enjoy meaningful conversations and have fun just like the rest of us (who knew).

When you forget that these people are highly successful, you are able to talk to them on the same level. The moment you get star struck you’re screwed. The bottom line is this: forget about whether people are famous or not when you meet them.


2. I thought I would have nothing valuable to tell them

No one has all the knowledge in the world. Even if someone is successful, there is always something that you know that they don’t – take advantage of this. For ages, I held back from reaching out to famous entrepreneurs and even dreaming that I could go kite surfing with them.

I somehow felt inferior and like I didn’t have anything valuable to give. When you have nothing to give it’s challenging to spend time with high profile people. I’m the kind of guy that never likes one-way exchanges of value.

What I’ve just said about have nothing valuable is a myth. In my humble opinion, I know blogging, social media, tech, personal development, and entrepreneurship at a super-human level.

Back to the office in Silicon Valley, as it turns out, I had a fair few trade secrets about tech and business. Some of the things I knew were sort after. The moral of the story is that you have to find your unique skill that the other person doesn’t have when meeting famous entrepreneurs.


3. I didn’t back myself

A lot of what I have described in this post comes down to a lack of belief. When you don’t believe in yourself, no one else will. How can you expect someone else to back you when you don’t? Well, you can’t.

The moment I believed that I was just like them, my luck started to change. I created my own luck like I always do. The thing is that I did back myself to a point. I mean I spent $5000 flying to the US with no meeting booked. That’s backing yourself, isn’t it?

Well, it is to a point. The trick is you’ve got to go all the way and not be half pregnant (sorry if this is politically incorrect it’s the best I could come up with).

That’s when success comes knocking at the door, and opportunities like kite surfing reveal themselves.


4. I was nervous about my failures in business

nervous-1Until I had gone to Silicon Valley, I didn’t realise how important my past failures were. Before my trip, I thought failures in business were to be frowned upon. When I got there, I realised that failures were celebrated like some god from the Roman Empire who had just won in battle.

The smell of the fresh blood of failure is what keeps Silicon Valley breathing at night. It’s the pulse of the landscape, and it’s not to be feared. Somehow I thought that if I revealed my failures, it would make me not worthy of an opportunity like kite surfing with these tycoons.

As it turned out, as usual, I was dead wrong. Failure is to be rejoiced because it shows that I take action instead of sitting on the sidelines and commentating like most people.


***Final Thought***

Be proud of who you are and don’t let limiting beliefs stop you from incredible opportunities. Often, your success lies on the other side of these BS fears. Forget about the labels and just be you. As long as you’re being authentic, you’ll attract the people you want to be surrounded by.

While I still have no idea how to kite surf I have faith that I’ll figure it out. Failing that, I’m a good swimmer, so maybe I can just go scuba diving instead….haha. If you see me on a beach near you trying to kite surf and falling over, don’t laugh and know that I’m doing my best.

How Do Implied Links Affect Your SEO

Everyone understands that backlinks are at the heart of search engine optimization. There are countless other factors involved, both on-page and off-page, but having other websites link to your website has been and always will be a critical factor in determining the relative “value” of your site in the eyes of Google.

Of course, a lot has changed over the years in terms of how Google handles and interprets backlinks. We’ve changed how we might think about link building or what sort of anchor text we might want to use. Google has cracked down on paid links and doubled down its efforts on rewarding “natural” links to determine the relative “authority” of a site too. Things change and you need to change with them.

They may not be all that new anymore, but you may not have heard of them. And to ignore their influence would be terribly imprudent: implied links.

Moving Beyond the Regular Link

When you think about traditional backlinks, the connection is pretty clear. I can link to http://www.youtube.com exactly like how I did right there or, even better, I can link to YouTube using appropriate anchor text like that.

In both cases, a reader of this blog post can click on the link and be sent directly to the YouTube homepage. That’s what Google might call an “express link.” That’s what the rest of us might call just a backlink, the same kind of backlink we’ve been using for years.


Where implied links differ, which is terribly confusing, is that they don’t really contain a backlink at all. There’s nowhere for the website visitor to click in order to access the resource being referenced. Instead, the visitor needs to type in the website URL manually into the address bar or he needs to search for it (likely through Google).

The Same as a Brand Mention?

If I was writing a blog post about social networks that are increasing in popularity, I might mention Snapchat or Periscope on that list. I might not link to either social media platform directly, but that is still a brand mention and, in effect, it operates as an implied link.

Given this, it’s easy to assume that brand mentions and implied links are exactly the same thing. They’re not. A brand mention is any time that someone mentions your brand. I could talk about my blog, Beyond the Rhetoric, in passing and that would count as a brand mention. I could write about Apple and the newest iPhone and that would count as a brand mention.

When either one of those hypothetical examples elevates to the status of an implied link is when someone reading that article actually searches for the brand new in Google’s search engine or manually types in the URL in the address bar. I imagine Google can only track the latter if you’re using Chrome, but the fundamental principle still applies. Until the visitor actually visits the target resource or brand page being mentioned, it’s not yet an implied link.

How Important Are Implied Links?

So, what does this all mean for the future of your search engine optimization efforts? As Google puts more weight in social signals, as the algorithm gets even more complicated and nuanced, as Google gets even more careful about how it handles traditional backlinks and anchor text, these “secondary” signals and factors will increase in importance.

“Black hat” link building was hugely popular for a number of years, because it represented a way you could game Google’s system and rise to the top of the search rankings. I imagine that implied links could take a similar turn as sites work to improve their reputation and “authority” in the eyes of Google. What you want, as always, is for your links — implied or traditional — to look natural and organic.

SEO will always be a game with a moving target. A popular site may not be characterized as the most authoritative site, just as an authoritative site may not necessarily be the most popular. For the purposes of SEO, reputation, authority and relevance will continue to trump all else. And implied links are one part of that increasingly complex equation.
